Background of the project

Dental care aids such as removable dentures, removable orthodontic appliances such as mouth guards, snoring devices, bleaching trays, as well as ordinary toothbrushes and inter-dental brushes, etc. are being used on a daily basis worldwide in order to improve people’s overall oral health.

All of the above listed devices are made of synthetic polymers (eg. polymethyl methacrylate, silicone, elastomere) which are porous. Once placed in the mouth they become quickly colonized with micro-organisms (fungi, especially Candida, bacteria, viruses) that form bio-film, and form a 3D extracellular matrix in which they build-up.
